Drew Barrymore was an open book as she talked about a range of topics from her ‘cripplingly difficult’ divorce with Will Kopelman which led her to drinking to gushing over his new wife Alexandra Michler.
The 47-year-old actress and television host – who went viral over a clip with Aubrey Plaza last week – candidly talked about the ups and downs in her personal life in a cover story for People magazine released on Tuesday.
Drew was married to art advisor Will, now 44, from 2012 to 2016 and called the years following the split ‘cripplingly difficult.’

She revealed that she ‘broke’ during her first winter on the East Coast and confided in liquor.
Drew explained: ‘It was just trying to numb the pain and feel good—and alcohol totally did that for me.

‘The drinking thing for me was a constant, like, “You cannot change. You are weak and incapable of doing what’s best for you. You keep thinking you will master this thing, and it’s getting the better of you.”‘
The star – who comes from Hollywood royalty – famously battled addiction as a teen and eventually beat it but her dependence on alcohol felt familiar.
She said: ‘After the life I planned for my kids didn’t work out — I almost think that was harder than the stuff [I went through] as a kid. It felt a lot more real because it wasn’t just me.

‘It was about these kids that I cared so much about. And then I probably cared so much that I was only giving to them and not taking care of myself. It was a messy, painful, excruciating walk through the fire and come back to life kind of trajectory.’
Drew said that many things gave her the motivation to change including her children, seeking therapy, and developing her talk show, The Drew Barrymore Show, which ‘gave me something to focus on and pour myself into. It gave us something to believe in.’
Her ex-husband went on to marry Vogue fashion editor Alexandra Michler, 35, in August 2021 and the ET star couldn’t be happier with how her blended family has turned out.

She told People: ‘Will has his side of the street so beautifully buttoned up with our gorgeous stepmother.
‘We’ve got an awesome family dynamic that proves that life goes on. Allie is my favorite person. I love her. I love us all being together. These kids have an example of one of the parents moving on and rebuilding another life for themselves. I’m like, “Oh, I don’t have to do that now? Perfect.”
