The health status of Kansas City Chiefs star quarterback Patrick Mahomes has been of the utmost concern to both the team itself and its loyal fans in the days leading up to the AFC Championship Game where they will host Joe Burrow’s Cincinnati Bengals for the second consecutive season.

This time, Patrick Mahomes’ wife was a little less vocal after her husband went out injured in the Divisional Round game against the Jacksonville Jaguars with a sprained ankle that will apparently limit him, but won’t stop him from seeking a rematch against the Bengals.
“Proud,” wrote Brittany Matthews, who already has a couple of kids with the NFL superstar, on her Instagram account as she shared a photo from a past Chiefs game against the Los Angeles Rams of the two kissing passionately on one mouth on the gridiron at GEHA Field at Arrowhead Stadium.

With the win, Mahomes secured his fifth consecutive AFC Championship Game at home, an unprecedented mark in the Super Bowl era. In other words, the Chiefs quarterback has never been eliminated before the Super Bowl since he earned the starting job with head coach Andy Reid’s team.

Patrick Mahomes and Kansas City Chiefs management were optimistic Saturday following their AFC Divisional Round win over the Jacksonville Jaguars. The star passer suffered a sprained right ankle, was treated on the field and, before halftime, had to go to the locker room for further testing.
Mahomes returned for the second half and, with some limitations, returned to the field until the end of the game. The diagnosis was a high ankle sprain, one of the most complicated injuries to treat in that area of the body. The problem is that the Super Bowl LIV MVP has only a week to be ready and needs his body to be 100% to be able to play with the mobility that makes him so dangerous.
The 27-year-old said he planned to undergo any treatment that could be helpful and be ready for Sunday, and that’s why the extra day of rest could be definitive.

Still, there is still no guarantee that Mahomes will play and the Chiefs’ explosive offense would not be the same in the hands of backup Chad Henne, even though he commanded a 98-yard offensive series that ended in a touchdown in the time he was on the field.
What is Patrick Mahomes’ injury?
An high ankle sprain (syndesmosis sprain) affects the ligaments of the tibia and fibula that attach the two lower leg bones to the ankle joint. If the ligament has significant damage and causes an opening between the two leg bones, the injury is considered serious and requires surgery. This would not be the case for Mahomes.
Typically, this injury occurs when the foot is forced into an outward rotation beyond its normal range. This motion creates stress on the inside of the ankle and the ligaments at the top of the ankle. The most severe form of the injury can also result in a fracture, as occurred this Sunday with Dallas Cowboys running back Tony Pollard.

When these ligaments are injured, the foot becomes unstable and the athlete cannot place his full body weight on the injured foot, causing intense pain, affecting the quarterback’s mobility and throwing support.
Another adverse factor of this injury is that, once the athlete finishes the game and the shoes are removed, swelling and pain increase, complicating rehabilitation, so it must be treated immediately, first to reduce swelling and then to strengthen the damaged ligaments.
